Western Australia Events
Our Co-ordinator in Western Australia is Joel Levin.
Western Australia joins IAP2!
Western Australia officially joined IAP2 Australasia in December 2007, forming a diverse sub-committee.
The WA sub-committee will host a series of events designed to progress the practice of community engagement, as well as increase IAP2 membership in the state.
IAP2 Australasian President Desley Renton said she was thrilled with the decision.
“Western Australian Brian Sadler was one of the original Board Members of the international body of IAP2, so it’s fitting that IAP2 has a progressive and enthusiastic committee in WA,” she said.
“I’d like to welcome all community engagement practitioners in WA, who will be able to share some unique experiences and perspectives with the broader IAP2 group.
“WA has a culture of deliberative decision-making and can boast a range of progressive community engagement practices. “
Joel Levin will head up a sub-committee with government, private, and non-profit representatives.
“Over the past 2 years, there have been a group of 10 or so people running meetings and conducting some needs analysis, with the aim of progressing the practice of community engagement in Western Australia.”
“IAP2 was a natural fit for the values and work of our group, and we’re looking forward to increasing the reach of the IAP2 values and approach. We’ve assembled a diverse sub-committee, which will representative the range of people working in this area.”

The IAP2 Certificate Training Program is available in Perth during 2009.
The training program was developed to meet the needs of IAP2 members. IAP2 trainers worked with practitioners from around the world to develop foundational tools that transcend national and cultural boundaries. Even advanced practitioners will find useful techniques to assist in working with the public and clients to establish effective public participation programs.
All three courses are presented in an experiential learning environment that provides students with the opportunity to explore their own public participation challenges with their instructor and peers. Interactive exercises and practical tips are used to enliven the basic theory and reference materials presented throughout each module and reinforce skills that participants can put to immediate use.

What you've missed so far:
In IAP2 terms, “EMPOWER” means to run a process where the participants have been given the ultimate decision making authority. The “EMPOWER” forum is for engagement practitioners to meet, ask questions, share learning and problem solve engagement projects. This unique opportunity provides a space for you to share your knowledge and learn from other practitioners.
You were invited to participate in the internationally recognised IAP2 Certificate Training, Modules 1 and 2 in Perth.
The $170 million Mitchell Freeway Extension is the first project in Western Australia to win a prestigious IAP2 Australasia award recognising the valuable contribution public participation has made to enhanced project decision-making.
Troy Pickard Mayor, City of Joondalup Community engagement is an important tool used to build and maintain the confidence of the community in decisions being made that will affect them. At this presentation learn about how the Joondalup Council used a number of engagement strategies to rebuild trust with the community and within the organisation. This was the inaugural event for International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) in WA and will profile how IAP2 plans to assist in the practice and development of community engagement in Western Australia.
Garry Hunt CEO, City of Joondalup
This event was of interest to senior staff and community engagement practitioners invested in the interface between internal decision making, community engagement and the importance of community trust in getting things done.
Attendees participated in a conversation with internationally acclaimed long-range planner and architect of public process, Steven Ames. Steven has worked extensively with communities in the U.S.A., Canada, Australia and New Zealand and has many observations to share about these engagement processes: the similarities and the differences. Throughout our conversation, Steven will draw upon a number of case studies, offer a range of tips and techniques, and highlight what to do when things occasionally go wrong.
