September 2009
Stacey Barr Workshop

Are you still struggling to find ‘meaningful’ measures to track your community engagement and public participation objectives? Or have you all but given in to the notion that this kind of thing just isn't measurable?
In either case, you've missed out on a great feedback to test and tune your P2 efforts! In the spirit of engagement and participation, this landmark opportunity was a hands-on, dialogue-based, highly participative workshop where participants created the measures THEY needed.

July 2009
Engaging with the City - Sustainable Sydney 2030
Julie Grimson from the City of Sydney talked about the City’s IAP2 Award winning community consultation program, undertaken as part of Sustainable Sydney 2030. We heard about how the city consulted directly with 12,000 people and many more through a range of innovative engagement techniques. We shared experiences with other community engagement practitioners.

Community Engagement Tools: Engaging with the Community and Managing Information through Cyberspace
IAP2 NSW kicked off their professional development for 2009 with their peers learning about innovative technology, tools and techniques to enhance and support projects, including ‘Bang the Table’, ‘Darzin’, ‘imeet’ and ‘Consultation Manager’. They also heard first hand how these tools work ‘on the ground’, with presentations from local community engagement practitioners and IAP2 members. They then got to meet other NSW practitioners and keep on top of industry trends.

Queensland Events

June 2009
Life After Databases and Information Management
Once again, these events were run in a variety of locations around the state. Are you looking for better tools to help your organisation’s staff engage with the community? When planning community consultation, how do you reach your audience? Some research shows that people prefer to provide their opinion from the comfort of their work desk or their home computer. Can online community engagement help you reach a broader and more diverse range of stakeholders? Online community engagement is inexpensive, easy, safe, and inclusive… and the community likes it! We invited Matt from Bang the Table to be our guest speaker for the June round of IAP2 networking events.

February 2009
Internal Engagement – getting the commitment from decision makers
IAP2 Queensland held 4 discussion groups and networking events simultaneously across the state in different locations. The discussion topic at all locations included, 'Internal Engagement – getting the commitment from decision makers'.

Communication and Marketing in Community Engagement: "Tell me all about it"
Do you have problems getting “bums on seats” for community engagement activities? If you answered yes, welcome to the club. Are you satisfied with the way information is communicated to the communities you work with and within your organisations? Do you understand the principles of marketing community engagement events and information? If you answered no to these last two questions, then you would have benefited greatly from our last IAP2 SA Professional Development session.

Online Community Engagement Tools
On-line community engagement technology is on the increase, but can it be truly representative of community opinion and feedback?
As community engagement practitioners, we need to fully understand the benefits, (and limitations) of such online tools. The use of such technology promises cost and time savings and increased engagement effectiveness. But what are all the available on-line choices and how do we make the transition from traditional methods? At our first network event for 2009 we heard about two innovative on-line community engagement tools.

Beyond Mission Statements: Building an internal culture of engagement
Have you ever felt puzzled or frustrated when you experience your organisation ‘talking the talk’, but being slow to ‘walk the walk’ in relation to stakeholder/community engagement and other organisational values? Have you ever wondered if the glossy mission statements and policies would ever lead to a change in ‘practices’? Many organisations aspire to a culture of engagement (internally and externally) but why is that so difficult to achieve and what are some of the elements that can support the development of an internal organizational culture of engagement?
This and more was discussed recently at our Beyond Mission Statements event.

May 2009
Genuine Indigenous Engagement
How do you effectively engage with Indigenous communities? This seminar sort to gain perspectives and experiences of engaging with Indigenous people and to provide greater insight into the learnings from these experiences, including the challenges and successes.

Further information is available for members from this event.

Getting There Together - Engaging for Behavioral Change
IAP2 WA joined the Strategic Communications Director of the Office of Road Safety, Roger Farley and discovered how community consultation is being used to build an important and ambitious road safety strategy for WA – TOWARDS ZERO. However, our first event of the year was a double-header. IAP2 Australasia President, Anne Pattillo, also joined us to share her experiences with engaging for behavioral change. Every year more than 3000 Australians are seriously injured on our roads. Educational campaigns deliver short term improvement but the search continues for a long-term solution. Community engagement has played a core role in informing development of the Road Safety Strategy for Western Australia 2008 - 2020.

Changing Climate, Changing Communities
Engaging communities about adapting and responding to climate change
IAP2 in association with the McCaughey Centre, University of Melbourne is hosted a full-day forum which will focus on engaging with communities on climate change issues. The event examined how and why communities need to be engaged about two critical issues. First, how do we adapt as a community to the long term impacts of a changing climate; and secondly how do we respond to extreme events (e.g. heatwaves, fire, storms) that are a direct result of climate change. The day included a range of large group presentations (including keynote speakers and panel discussions) and small group discussions and workshops.

LEADING PRACTICE: Local Government & Community Engagement
Community Engagement – local government has embraced the concept – so what’s next?
Perhaps getting it right, doing it meaningfully, moving beyond informing communities to collaborating with them, putting systems in place to support engagement across your organisation and much more. This will be a great opportunity not only to listen to the experiences of other Councils and hear what worked & what didn’t work, but also to workshop the issues with your colleagues.
Workshop and case study presenters included recent IAP2 Award winners and other leading community practitioners.
