What is this course?
Building on IAP2's internationally recognised best practices in public participation, and the work of Dr Peter Sandman, an expert in risk and crisis communication, this new course looks at emotion and outrage and how to identify and address these factors in public participation programs. This is the course for any practitioner dealing with the key issues facing our communities at this time.
Who should take this training?
Are you working in the field of public participation or stakeholder relations? Do you frequently find yourself working on projects that are controversial, emotional or that result in public outrage? This 2 day course will help you build your skills and knowledge for designing, planning and addressing outrage, and help you create meaningful, effective public participation programs
Learning Objectives:
During this course you will discover:
•Six practical strategies for managing outrage
•New behaviours that you can apply immediately
•A new way of thinking and analysing outrage
•New ways to plan and implement public participation (P2) projects when people are outraged.
This class is designed to help you:
•Link meaningful and best practices for public participation with outrage and emotion
•Understand the principles and concepts of both and how they can work together
•Understand the differences in the goals and ethics between public participation as practiced by IAP2, and outrage management
•Develop a common understanding of the foundational concepts and definitions
•Understand strategies for assessing and adderssing outrage and how to plan for it in your P2 program
•Express your specific learning needs and give you time to translate that into practice.
After taking this course, participants will:
•Have an increased awareness of how outrage hinders public particpation programs and how to plan for its management
•Understand the principles, approaches and strategies for dealing with emotion and outrage in public participation
•Practice applying the principles, strategies and approaches and prepare for upcoming challenges.
Understand and learn how to identify outrage and its causes in public participation situations
